Cloud Computing Study – Call for Participation

JISC has commissioned a study at the University of Strathclyde to review the environmental and organisational implications of cloud computing in higher and further education. The project team is keen to hear from HE and FE professionals who are involved in managing ICT, administration, elearning and estates who would be willing to participate in a 20-30 minute telephone interview on the subject of cloud computing (where computing resources are delivered over the Internet by external service providers). The move towards cloud computing is a significant trend in the HE/FE sector and our activity reviews and workshops will explore in greater depth issues highlighted by previous reviews in this area. ‘Activity Reviews’ with key stakeholders will examine the implications of cloud computing, how its environmental and institutional impact can be assessed and review areas where further advice and guidance is required in the community.

In addition, the project team will be running two free workshops which those taking part in activity reviews may attend. These facilitated workshops are likely to be held in Glasgow and Birmingham in February and March 2010, and participants will explore the political, economic, social, technological, legal and environmental factors relating to Cloud Computing and its use in HE and FE. Travel and subsistence expenses of up to £50 will be reimbursed. The workshops will provide the opportunity for participants to share knowledge and network with peers, and to help shape advice and guidance to be developed for the sector. Workshops are not vendor sponsored and are open to a wide range of representatives from HE and FE.

If you are interested in taking part in an activity review and/or one of our free workshops please email [email protected] giving your name, institution, contact details and preferred workshop location. Please also include your interest in the project work if relevant (e.g. your institution is using cloud computing in HE/FE, you are not using cloud computing but would like to find out more, you are a provider who would like to find out about the needs of sector, etc.). Alternatively follow this link http://ewds.strath.ac.uk/CloudResponseForm.aspx and fill in these details using our online form.
