Protovis Twitter Community Visualizations from a Google Spreadsheet (eAssessment Scotland delegate network)

If you are reading this post on my blog (with a browser other than Internet Explorer) here is a Twitter network diagram for eAssessment Scotland 2011:

This is a slight variation on my previous post (Ported: Tony Hirst’s Using Protovis to Visualise Twitter Connections to Google Spreadsheet with Embeddable Gadget) in that instead of using a Twitter search to build a list of names to make a network diagram, it uses a list of usernames from a spreadsheet. This provides an easy way to generate a network diagram as, in the case of eAssessment Scotland, you’ve collect twitter usernames at registration.

It doesn’t stop there. I’ve got a growing collection of Google Spreadsheets that allow you to interact with the Twitter API to grab copies of your Friend/Followers lists, status updates, twitter searches and Twitter list creators which all could be passed through this new script to generate network diagrams.

I should say at this point the limits of the script in terms of calls to the Google Social Graph API, which is used to find connection between people, is untested and I’m sure there will be a point when it falls over.

I’ve submit the new script to the Google Apps Script Library, but it will be a while before it is public so here is a copy so that you can start making your own.
