What about GDPR?

Talk at ELESIG Scotland, University of Dundee, 26 November 2018

I was asked by ELESIG Scotland to talk about the GDPR in the context of learning and teaching. The presentation covered some of the basic principles including definitions of personal data and processing activities, lawful basis for processing data, and a look at how GDPR increases the accountability of organisations using personal data.
As part of this talk I included some examples of how other institutions are dealing with GDPR when using third party tools. In particular I shared examples provided by Salman Usman (Academic E-learning Developer) Kingston University London for using padlet, PeerWise and TEAMMATES. Salman has worked with Kingston’s Data Protection Officer to develop guidance for using these tools when no data processing agreement is possible. The slides contain more details of their approach, but this can also be summarised by:

  • supported alternatives
  • make optional
  • obscure identity
  • limit functionality

I will no doubt revisit this topic and write more about it in 2019.
